Creative nonfiction is a genre that opens doors for student to write about their lives and what matters the most to them. Subject matter, voice, style, and personal experiences are all a part of crafting nonfiction pieces. In this two-week workshop, student writers will explore various forms of creative nonfiction, including reading excerpts from published authors, developing a habit for writing daily, improving writing style using the process of editing and revision and creating a system for compiling future ideas and thoughts.
Getting Ready for College Essays Grades 9-11
College essays strike fear into the hearts of every student and parent preparing for college application submission. Understanding that these essays are a form of creative nonfiction - the personal essay -gives students a framework to begin to develop ideas and perspectives for their submissions. We will work for 2 weeks collecting "scenes" from our lives while expanding and exploring details and perspectives, The goal is to move writing beyond re-telling an experience to a piece that provides insight into life's complexities. The students will also create a system for compiling future ideas and thoughts.
